Statement by EU High Representative Catherine Ashton i on the 2012 UNGA resolution on the situation of human rights

in Myanmar

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission issued the following statement today:

"I am very pleased with the UN General Assembly's Third Committee adoption by consensus of the resolution on the situation of human rights in Myanmar on 26 November, 2012.

The resolution welcomes the substantial efforts towards political reform, democratization, national reconciliation and improvements in the situation of human rights. At the same time, it recognizes the remaining challenges, including human rights violations against ethnic minorities and addressing the underlying causes of the violence in the Rakhine State.

I am particularly pleased by the constructive approach taken by the Government of Myanmar in working closely on the text with the EU, as the main sponsor. I also appreciate the invaluable support of the co-sponsors in achieving this outcome.

The unprecedented adoption of the resolution by consensus is a clear sign of the international community's commitment to supporting the reform process under way and the aspirations of the people of Myanmar for full respect of human rights, economic and social development and lasting peace."
