Having adopted strong rules on transfers of firearms both within and outside the Union, the EU is now in a position to ratify the UN firearms protocol, which is what the Commission has proposed today. The purpose of the UN firearms protocol is to facilitate and strengthen cooperation in order to prevent, combat and eradicate the illicit manufacturing of and trafficking in small arms, such as handguns and pistols. In signing the firearms protocol the EU committed to aligning its legislation with its international obligations.

The Council should now adopt the ratification proposal, with the consent of the European Parliament.
