Schulz on the visit of the President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos

Following the meeting with Juan Manuel Santos, President of Colombia, the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz i stated:

"The European Parliament firmly supports deepening relations between the European Union and Colombia.

President Santos' visit today to the European Parliament, as well as his meetings in other European capitals, helps define how the European Union and its Member States can support Colombia in a crucial phase in its history.

After more than 50 years of conflict, more than 200.000 casualties, more than 25.000 missing people and 5 million internally displaced people, the time for peace has come. As Colombia enters the final stage of negotiations, it needs the political and financial backing of all those who seek a peaceful and lasting solution for the country, both at home and abroad.

In December 2012, the European Parliament voted with a large majority in favour of the trade agreement with Colombia, and our relations continue to strengthen. Yet, the European Parliament also pursues free movement of people between the EU and Colombia, and not just free movement of goods and services. That is why we welcome last week's news that Colombia fulfils the criteria for visa-free access to the Schengen area. The European Parliament will remain at the forefront to ensure this happens as soon as possible.

I also raised the issue of the implementation of the roadmap for the protection of human rights, environmental and labour standards and I took note of President Santos' commitment on this subject."
