What’s up Europe? - Spoken Beat Night
Let op! Dit programma vindt plaats in de Melkweg.
What does it mean to be European? And what does it mean to grow up in Britain in the post-Brexit Era? When are you perceived as ‘European’ and when are you not? We will explore these questions during a special edition of Spoken Beat Night with spoken word artist Jeannine Valeriano, drummer Onno Govaert and two talented spoken word artists from across the channel: Madi Maxwell-Libby & Jacob Sam-La Rose.
At a time when discontent and rivalry seem to dominate the European project, instead of its original aims of peace and international solidarity, we will get to the core of European identity in 2018 during an interdisciplinary concert. How do different generations from Britain and across the continent imagine a shared European future?
Spoken Beat Night is an initiative of singer, writer & spoken word artist Jeannine Valeriano who plays with language and turns words into music, revealing the sensuality of language. The aim is to establish harmony out of diversity and create an ideal, albeit just for one evening. Spoken Beat Night combines music, spoken word and live animation into unique concerts that speak to head and heart. Valeriano and musical director Maarten Ornstein will compose a special European concert for the Forum.
Madi Maxwell-Libby is a comedy-performer, spoken word artist and Roundhouse Poetry Slam Champion. Maxwell-Libby was commissioned by the BBC One to write a piece on Brexit. She is currently working on her first solo show MASSIVE SENSE OF URGENCY in which she tries to understand our economic system, the neoliberal agenda, and why she doesn’t have a copy.
Jacob Sam-La Rose is a writer and poet of British-Guyanese heritage, born and raised in England. La-Rose is a leading figure within the UK’s youth slam poetry movement, passionately communicating his belief in the power of poetry to change people’s lives. His work Breaking Silence collects poetry that is … “fresh, vivid and masterly in its evocation of contemporary Britain.”
Onno Govaert studied jazz drums and graduated cum laude from the Conservatorium of Amsterdam in 2009. His playing has variously been described as ‘innovative’, ‘spectacular’, ‘relentless’, ‘possessed by the devil’ and ‘post Jim Black’. ‘Onno Govaert stokes the band’s fires with spazzy rumbles and unflagging motion’, commented Chicago Reader, and Volkskrant described his style as ‘full of initiative and uninhibited.’
This programme is a part of the second edition of the Forum on European Culture: “Act for Democracy!”. At a time when the future of Europe is more uncertain than ever before, we bring together leading and inspiring artists, thinkers, economists and politicians during a 4-day interdisciplinary programme to discuss Europe and its future.

Wat betekent het om Europeaan te zijn? En hoe is het om op te groeien in Engeland na de Brexit? Wanneer word je gezien als Europeaan en wanneer niet? We gaan op zoek naar antwoorden op deze vragen tijdens een speciale editie van de Spoken Beat Night met spoken word artiest Jeannine Valeriano, drummer Onno Govaert en twee getalenteerde spoken word artiesten van de andere kant van het kanaal: Madi Maxwell-Libby & Jacob Sam-La Rose.
Nu we leven in een tijd waarin ontevredenheid en rivaliteit in plaats van solidariteit en eendracht het Europees project domineren, gaan we op zoek naar de kern van Europese identiteit anno nu. Hoe zien verschillende generaties, zowel uit Engeland als van het Europees continent, een gedeelde Europese toekomst voor zich?
Spoken Beat Night is een initiatief van zangeres, schrijver en spoken word artiest Jeannine Valeriano. Valeriano speelt met taal, verandert woorden in muziek en laat de sensualiteit van taal zien met als doel harmonie te zoeken in diversiteit, al is het maar voor een avond. Spoken Beat Night combineert muziek, spoken word en live animaties tot unieke concerten die zowel het hart als het hoofd beroeren. Valeriano en muzikant en componist Maarten Ornstein componeren speciaal voor het Forum een Europees concert.
Madi Maxwell-Libby is een komiek, spoken word artiest en Roundhouse poetry slam kampioen. Maxwell-Libby schreef in opdracht van de BBC een stuk over de Brexit. Momenteel werkt ze aan haar eerste solo voorstelling MASSIVE SENSE OF URGENCY waarin ze het economisch systeem en neoliberalisme onderzoekt.
Jacob Sam-La Rose is een schrijver en dichter met Brits-Guyanese roots. La-Rose is een prominente naam in de jeugd poetry slam beweging in de UK. Zijn poëziebundel Breaking Silence waarin La-Rose het Engeland van vandaag tot leven brengt, werd lovend ontvangen.
Onno Govaert studeerde in 2009 Cum Laude af als jazzdrummer aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Zijn muziek wordt beschreven als innovatief en spectaculair. De Volkskrant noemde Govaert’s muziek initiatiefrijk en zonder remming.

Deze organisatie organiseert debatten, seminars, theater- en filmvoorstellingen met betrekking tot culturele, sociale en politieke vraagstukken in Amsterdam. Door middel van deze activiteiten worden vele interessegebieden bestudeerd en bediscussieerd, zoals technologie, kunst, economie, de veranderende bevolkingssamenstelling, Europa etc. De Balie is open voor een breed publiek en voor alle soorten media.
De Balie is gevestigd in het voormalige gerechtshof aan het Leidseplein in Amsterdam, en is in 1982 opgericht. Voormalig PvdA-politicus Felix Rottenberg i is mede-oprichter van de organisatie.
