Commenting on the series of deadly bomb attacks in Bagdad, Iraq, that have killed at least 63 people and injured 185, the President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek stated:

"The European Parliament strongly condemns the multiple bomb attacks that killed at least 63 and wounded as many as 185 in Bagdad, Iraq, today. The targeting of non-military civilian targets further underline the despicable nature of this heinous crime, aimed solely at terrorizing ordinary Iraqis.

Now is the time for the Iraqi political elites to unite. Now that the Iraqi authorities have assumed full responsibility for the security and well being of their country the time has come to show true political leadership. Now more than ever they must put power-games aside and rise above particular interests. The time has come to start thinking of the well being of the Iraqi people - all Iraqi people - and build a new Iraq.

I am convinced that what all Iraqis want and need right now is stability and peace in order to rebuild their country into one where their families can prosper. I urge all sides to refrain from continued acts of aggression, which risk escalating into a dangerous spiral of violence, which will benefit no-one.

I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their life in this meaningless attack. I wish all those injured a speedy recovery.”
