In the wake of Prime Minister David Cameron’s general election victory, Simon Budden reports his mandate to seek EU reform and intention to put Britain’s ‘renegotiated relationship’ to a referendum.

Details of British plans have been vague but Peter Cleppe of Open Europe, sees area for work around benefit reform, eurozone market access and deregulation. Some, like former Europe Minister, Denis MacShane, fear this could be the beginning of the end for British membership of the EU. Others, such as Clare Moody MEP, see the situation more positively, noting that British voters’ priorities lie elsewhere.
