The States General represent the entire Dutch people. This provision reflects the representative and national character of the States General.
Until 1795, during the Republic, the States General consisted of representatives from the seven provinces, who primarily served the regional interests. Since 1814, States General has been the name of the representative assembly.
The most important tasks of the States General lie in the area of government oversight, regulated in Articles 65 through 72, and in the area of legislation, regulated in Articles 81 through 89.
