Jean-Claude Trichet, the new president of the European Central Bank (ECB) has warned against suspending the euro stability and growth pact.
Speaking in the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee on Monday (1 December) for the first time as President of the European Central Bank, Mr Trichet advocated that the Pact should not be changed.
"The Pact is not dead. We should not change it - if we want to generate confidence", Mr Trichet said.
On Thursday this week, the governing council of the ECB will meet for the first time, since the euro zone finance ministers decided not to fine Germany and France - despite the fact that the two economic heavyweights have broken the rules underpinning the euro for the third consecutive year.
