According to a recently published poll 72% of the French public supports the adoption of the European Constitution.

The poll conducted by TNS-Sofres on behalf of the pro-European Robert Schuman Foundation also revealed that there is less enthusiasm for the idea of having a European President.

According to the survey the French are almost evenly split on the issue - with 47 percent directly opposed to having a European President and 46 percent supportive of the idea.

The poll also showed that 55 percent of those questioned expect their MEPs to defend the national interest in the EU first and foremost.
