Malta will put the European Constitution to a parliamentary vote during the summer, the daily Times of Malta has reported.

While speaking to the press on Tuesday (15 February), Maltese Prime minister and leader of the Nationalist Party Lawrence Gonzi said that the Maltese Parliament would debate the European Constitution and take a vote by mid-July.

He also explained the government had decided to postpone the parliamentary discussion by a few months to give more time to the opposition - the Maltese Labour Party - to analyse the treaty and come up with a position.

The government, he said, wanted the Constitution to be agreed on by both sides of the House.

Malta is one of the fifteen countries to ratify the Constitution by parliamentary vote - the remaining ten are set to hold a referendum.

A recent eurobarometer poll showed Europeans had only little knowledge of the Constitutional Treaty.

This is the case for 60 percent of the Maltese population, with 28 percent not having heard of it at all. Only 31 percent were in favour of the document.
