President Sarkozy recalled the positions of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union following Russia’s decision to recognise the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. He also spoke of the forthcoming extraordinary meeting of the European Council on 1 September to discuss the crisis in Georgia.

President Sarkozy stressed the urgent need to defuse tension and apply in full the six-point ceasefire agreement. The in-depth discussions also focused on the implementation of additional security measures and the question of refugees.
