Statement by the spokesperson of EU High Representative Catherine Ashton on Madagascar

The spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:

"The High Representative welcomes the signing, by the principal Malagasy political partners, on 17 September in Antananarivo of the Roadmap for ending the crisis in Madagascar.

She would urge all the Malagasy political partners to continue their efforts to render operational as soon as possible a transition process that is based on consensus and respect for human rights, with a view to a rapid return to constitutional order.

The High Representative congratulates the Troika members of the SADC's political cooperation body and all the other participants in the discussions which have made the signing possible.

She would reiterate that the European Union remains available to give political and financial support for the transition process should the SADC and the African Union so request, as provided for in the Roadmap and in close collaboration with the international community."
