Statement by the spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, EU High Representative on latest developments in Yemen

The spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:

"With the return of President Saleh to Yemen today, the High Representative calls on the President and all parties in Yemen to exercise calm and restraint, refrain from any violence and maintain the course towards a swift political agreement in accordance with the Gulf Cooperation Council initiative.

The interests of the nation and of the Yemeni people must come first. A turnaround in Yemen's fortunes on many fronts —economic, political and humanitarian —is essential for the security and livelihoods of millions of Yemenis."
