Europees Parlement: EU landen moeten meer doen om vluchtelingen uit Tunesië te helpen (en)

EU countries should do more to help resettle refugees stranded on the Tunisia-Libya border in deplorable conditions, MEPs stressed in a debate with Commissioner Malmström on Wednesday evening. This is "embarrassing" and "shameful" for the EU, said some MEPs, recalling its commitment to support Tunisia following the fall of Ben Ali's regime. They also praised the Tunisian people's hospitality in keeping the door open to those who fled Libya.
Ms Malmström agreed on the need for solidarity and responsibility-sharing, but underlined that the ultimate decision to receive refugees has to be taken by each Member State. So far, only seven EU countries have pledged to resettle refugees.
