Treaties by Palau

The spokesperson of High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice President of the Commission Catherine Ashton issued the following statement yesterday:

The High Representative welcomes the signature by Palau of eight core United Nations human rights treaties on 20 September 2011.

Palau's signature of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance represents an enormous step forward by Palau concerning the promotion and protection of human rights. The High Representative looks forward to Palau proceeding to ratification in due course.

The High Representative hopes that other countries in the Pacific region which have not yet signed the core UN human rights conventions will give consideration to signature.
