Commenting on the 30th anniversary of the death of Egyptian President Anwar al-Sadat, the President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek i stated:

"Having experienced war, Sadat knew all too well the value of peace. The 1979 Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty was a great achievement in a visionary process of reconciliation with Israel which aimed at progress, stability and security for the two countries.

North Africa and the Middle East are a region in transition. The EU has been the first to support and encourage democratic changes which are bringing down autocratic regimes and giving people hope for a better future.

But in an effort to renew, we should not dismiss the achievements of the past. The spirit of the 1978 Camp David Accords between Sadat, Begin, and Carter should be reinforced, not crippled. That was one of the messages which President Carter also stressed this week in the European Parliament.

Sadat died for having dared for peace. Thirty years after his assassination, Egyptians should honour his memory and his legacy, making sure that violent forces will not suppress the peaceful drive for democratic change."
