The Polish Presidency welcomes today’s positive decision taken by the Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER) on the compromise regarding the revision of Directive relating to fruit juices and certain similar products intended for human consumption (2001/112/EC).

According with an agreement between the Council and the European Parliament, once all procedural steps are completed, including the vote of the European Parliament at its plenary session, the proposal concerning fruit juices will be adopted by the Council and the European Parliament in the first reading.

The amendment of the directive will help to reflect technical progress in methods of production of fruit juices and certain similar products, which took place after 2001. The project is technical in nature - it confirms the distinction between a fruit juice and a fruit juice from concentrate, organizes the provisions on the aromas in juices, excludes sugars from the list of ingredients permitted for use in juices and contributes to better information for consumers (e.g. in terms of naming juices from two or more fruits).

The entry into force of the proposed amendments to the Directive will enhance the quality of juices and nectars on the market, and the standardisation of their labelling. The changes will also enable standardisation of quality requirements for juices and nectars.
