Statement by EU High Representative Catherine Ashton on the occasion of the Universal Children's Day

Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, made the following statement today:

"Today we celebrate Universal Children's Day, an opportunity to reflect on our most precious asset - the next generation.

As we do so, we remember that for so many children there is no childhood. Too many live in poverty - too many in fear.

Every year thousands of children suffer as a result of conflict, some being forced to become child soldiers, others losing family, friends and facing injury and death.

We remember particularly at this time the plight of so many young girls who are forced into marriage, prostitution and slavery - many losing their lives through pregnancy and childbirth, rape and abuse.

I want us all to redouble our efforts to give children their childhood, to see them fulfil their potential and to pledge to ensure this next generation inherit a world that puts their needs first."
