Statement by the Spokesperson of the High Representative Catherine Ashton on the terrorist attacks in Colombia

Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:

"The High Representative condemns the recent terrorist attacks in Tumaco and Villa Rica in Colombia that claimed at least 18 lives and injured almost 80 people. The High Representative extends her sympathy to the families of the victims and the Colombian government and people.

Such unprovoked violence is unacceptable. Indications that the FARC may have joined with criminal groups in these attacks are a cause of concern. The FARC have a choice between contributing to peace and sliding into criminality. It is due time for them to make their choices.

The High Representative reiterates her call on the FARC and other illegal groups to put an end to their violence and listen to the demands of the Colombian people for a sustainable peace in the country, with democracy and full respect of human rights.
