French President Nicolas Sarkozy i on Wednesday evening officially declared himself a candidate for the presidential elections, with the first round on 22 April. Sarkozy, who has pledged to adhere to the German economic model of belt-tightening and budget-balancing, has been trailing the Socialist contender, Francois Hollande, in the polls.
