Met dank overgenomen van Directoraat-generaal Maritieme zaken en Visserij (MARE) i, gepubliceerd op woensdag 18 april 2012.

Commissioner Maria Damanaki i, in charge of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, will visit Latvia on 19 April 2012.

The Commissioner will meet Mr Valdis Dombrovskis i, Prime Minister of Latvia, and Ms Laimdota Straujuma, Minister of Agriculture, in Riga. Discussions will focus on the on-going reform of the Common Fisheries Policy and the proposed new European Maritime and Fisheries Fund. The new fisheries policy will aim at preserving fish stocks at sustainable levels for the benefit of current and future generations by managing fisheries in a responsible, science-based way. Regionalisation of the policy making is an important aspect of the reform and Commissioner Damanaki will put emphasis on finding solutions for the Baltic Sea during her visit. The Integrated Maritime Policy and its "blue growth" strategy in support of maritime sectors will also be discussed.

Commissioner Damanaki will equally meet fisheries and maritime stakeholders and visit a fish-processing company. Two press points are organised during the visit: one with minister Straujuma at the fish-processing company at 11h30 local time (10h30 Brussels), and a second one after the meeting with Prime minister Dombrovskis at 13h30 local time.
