Statement by the spokesperson of High Representative Catherine Ashton on the ratification by the Philippines of the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT)

The spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:

"The High Representative warmly welcomes the ratification of the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment by the Philippines on 17 April 2012 and congratulates the Philippine Government for their achievement.

With this accession, the Philippines have further reinforced their commitment to the complete eradication of torture. This comes a few months after the accession to the Rome Statute (30 August 2011) - a step that demonstrated the Philippine government's strong commitment in favour of promoting human rights."
