Schulz: Europa is verplicht situatie Roma te verbeteren (en)

Met dank overgenomen van Voorzitter Europees Parlement (EP-voorzitter) i, gepubliceerd op maandag 8 april 2013.

Ahead of International Roma Day, on 8 April, the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz stated:

"Respect for fundamental rights of our citizens is one of the strongest building blocks of the European Union. The principle of non-discrimination is one of our core values.

Yet, the largest minority group in Europe - the Roma - continues to suffer from social exclusion and be the object of discrimination on a daily basis.

It is our duty on a national and European level to address this intolerable situation. Clearer targets, closer monitoring of progress, increased participation in decision-making and better use of EU funds are all necessary steps.

International Roma Day offers us an opportunity to measure the gulf which unfortunately still exists between pledges and achievements."
