On the occasion of the re-election of Giorgio Napolitano i as President of the Republic of Italy, the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz i stated:

"On behalf of the European Parliament and on my own behalf, I would like to congratulate Giorgio Napolitano as President of the Republic of Italy.

I would like to offer the full cooperation of the European Parliament for the important challenges ahead of this second mandate.

I warmly thank Giorgio Napolitano for his sense of responsibility and generosity in accepting this mandate at such a difficult moment. I am confident that his institutional stature and his experience will help the country to get out of the impasse, and to restore the stability, cohesion and trust, that both Italy and Europe need.
