Europees Parlement eist duidelijkheid over Amerikaanse data-verzamel programma (en)

The US government needs to clarify further the recent revelations of a secret programme to gather user data from internet companies such as Google and Facebook and its implications for EU citizens' privacy, said MEPs in a plenary debate on Tuesday. They also agreed that prompt reform of the EU's current data protection rules would help prevent the recurrence of such situations.

The need for the US government to abide by EU data protection standards, the "extra-territorial" implications of the new data protection rules, which would apply to non-EU companies dealing with European citizens' data, and the future of the EU-US data protection agreement in the fight against terrorism and serious crime were the key issues raised by MEPs in the discussion.

Commission Vice-President Viviane Reding, will address these issues at a debate in the Civil Liberties Committee on 19 June.
