Schulz over de situatie in Egypte (en)
Commenting on the recent developments in Egypt, the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz stated:
"The democratic vigilance and civic activism of Egyptian citizens remain a source of comfort in these crucial and dramatic days.
I take note of the road map announced by General al-Sisi and today's pledges by interim President Adly Mansour. Democracy, civilian rule and civil rights must return as soon as possible to the country and this must be achieved through a clear electoral calendar and a process which is peaceful, inclusive and transparent.
All sides must show the highest sense of responsibility, restraint and a genuine willingness to reach national reconciliation and political compromise. Confrontation must be replaced by dialogue, in deeds and not just in words.
A strong parliament, expression of all the civic forces and views which make-up the Egyptian society, is the best safeguard against any authoritarian drift and a mean to ensure the stability, democracy and pluralism of the future Egypt."
