Met dank overgenomen van Voorzitter Europees Parlement (EP-voorzitter) i, gepubliceerd op maandag 8 juli 2013.

The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz made the following statement on the situation in Egypt:

"The growing deadly clashes in Egypt are alarming and shocking. I strongly condemn the use of violence against civilians who demonstrate.

Egypt's security forces and all political actors must show responsibility and stop the bloodshed.

In this critical and tense time, the preservation of national unity and reconciliation must remain the highest priority of all Egyptians in order to ensure the earliest possible return to a peaceful and democratic political process."
