The Human Rights Subcommittee will discuss the situation in Syria with two human rights activists from Syria on Wednesday afternoon.

Mr Mustafa Haid, director of Dawlati, a civil society group promoting non-violent resistance and human rights principles, and Ms Farah Hwijeh, a civil society leader supporting the participation of Syrian women in the process of building peace through political means, will.address the committee.

Some 6.8 million people in Syria, almost a third of the population, have been affected by the conflict, including more than 4.2 million displaced inside Syria (according to figures from 15 August 2013). The United Nations estimates that over 100,000 Syrians have been killed in the conflict. On 3 September, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that the number of Syrians displaced as refugees had exceeded 2 million.
