Cecilia Malmström welcomes new EU rules facilitating the confiscation of criminal profits

Today the Ambassadors of the EU Member States approved in the Permanent Representatives Committee (COREPER) the result of the negotiations with the European  iParliament on new EU legislation on how to confiscate profits made through criminal activities (Directive on the freezing and confiscation of proceeds of crime in the EU). The Council and the European Parliament are expected to formally adopt the new rules early next year.

"The new Directive will make it easier to hit criminals where it hurts the most - by going after their money. It fills important gaps in our legislation which are exploited by organised criminal groups. The confiscation of criminal profits brings money back where it belongs, to the benefit taxpayers and victims of crime. It helps deter crime by showing that crime does not pay and protects our economy against criminal infiltration and corruption," said Cecilia Malmström, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs.
