Why is it important to improve HIV prevention in Europe?

HIV/AIDS remains a major public health problem in Europe. The number of newly reported HIV cases is increasing, which shows persistent HIV transmission in many European countries.

Although the number of people living with HIV (PLHIV) is on the rise, which demonstrates a progressive improvement of the effectiveness of treatment, a high number of newly diagnosed cases are still identified late, reflecting a low uptake of HIV testing and limited access to it. The HIV late diagnosed persons are more likely to respond poorly to treatment and to have transmitted infection while being unaware of their HIV status.

In Europe, the HIV transmission remains concentrated in key population groups, such as men who have sex with men (MSM), migrants, people who inject drugs (PWID) and their sexual partners.

With most of the PLHIV persons in need of receiving treatment in Europe, HIV became a chronic infectious disease. People on antiretroviral treatment (ARV) live longer, but some of them can develop disabilities. This reduces the number of healthy life years ahead of them, mainly due to the persistent chronic conditions, associated diseases and long term medications side effects.

About the event

The HIV/AIDS Prevention cluster meeting is an opportunity for European media, policy makers and subject matter experts to discuss how to improve the response to the epidemic using the best practices developed with the support of the EU Health Programme.

The forum will develop through four specific sessions focused on how to increase the coverage and availability of prevention programmes in order to reach the most vulnerable populations groups.

Examples will be given of tools available for improving the quality of the HIV/AIDS and co-infections programmes while ensuring cost-effectiveness.

In the wider context of treatment as prevention, experts will share experiences and ideas with the aim of improving the quality of life of those persons living with HIV and reducing the risk of transmission and the development of antiretroviral therapy (ART) resistance.
