British EU affairs minister David Lidington said that EU leaders should select the "best man or woman for the job" as head of the EU commission. "There is no treaty requirement to limit the choice to a certain group of people," he said when asked about the top candidates.
Lidington also made a statement on the relationship between the European Commission and the European External Action Service i: "One of the things not yet right is the relationship between the European Commission and the European External Action Service." The commission should use its tools (trade, commercial benefits) to spur reforms in countries "so people don't feel the need to flee".
