The Rape of Europa tells the story of the systematic theft and deliberate destruction of Europe's art treasures during the Third Reich and the Second World War, and the Allies’ effort to preserve and return it. For twelve long years, the Nazis looted and destroyed art on a scale unprecedented in history. Young art professionals, as well as ordinary heroes - from lorry drivers to department store clerks - fought back to safeguard, rescue and return the millions of lost, hidden and stolen treasures.

Germany, Richard Berge & Bonni Cohen. 117 minutes., English subtitles

With an introduction by Dr. Katja Lubina, who wrote her PhD on the restitution of Nazi looted art. The screening is part of the “Fake It or Leave It” film series, in cooperation with The Maastricht Centre for Arts and Culture, Conservation and Heritage.

Fake it or leave it: on fair and just practices in art and heritage worlds

Matters of fairness and justice are high on the agendas of art and heritage worlds today: A surge of art forgery cases, the illicit trade in - or restitution of - looted objects of art and heritage, as well as controversies regarding the conservation of artworks hint at challenges and risks, respectively.

But how can art and heritage worlds fairly acknowledge these economic, political and ethical challenges and mitigate the legal risks? What are best practices of fairness and justice when it comes to building and reassuring trust and transparency in the market, as well as when it comes to establishing and enforcing necessary legal frameworks and regulations in art and heritage worlds?

The 3 programmed films ( F for Fake, Beltracchi and the Rape of Europa) highlight some of the relevant issues. They are introduced, contextualized and evaluated by eminent experts of art and heritage.

The Maastricht Centre for Arts and Culture, Conservation and Heritage (MACCH) organizes this moderated film series in collaboration with Studium Generale and Cinema Lumière.

Taking place during TEFAF, the series precedes the conference “Fair and Just Practices: Art and heritage worlds from the perspectives of markets and law”, which MACCH organizes in partnership with the Bonnefantenmuseum. Together, the film series and conference aim to analyse, visualise and contextualize (un-)fair practices in art and heritage worlds from a variety of disciplinary and trans-disciplinary perspectives.
