Wednesday 21 September: A transatlantic Citizens' Dialogue on tax avoidance and privacy in the digital age

Met dank overgenomen van Europese Commissie (EC) i, gepubliceerd op woensdag 21 september 2016.

The news:

Columbia University in New York will host the EU Commissioner for Competition, Margrethe Vestager, who will discuss tax avoidance and privacy issues in the digital economy with the 2001 Nobel Laureate in Economics and University Professor Joseph E. Stiglitz and Senator Mario Monti, the former EU Commissioner for Competition and former Prime Minister of Italy. The event will be moderated by Merit E. Janow, Dean of Columbia School of International and Public Affairs (in New York) and by Italian journalist Sergio Nava in Milan.

The background:

In line with the European Commission's political priorities, the very first transatlantic Citizens' Dialogue will particularly focus on three of the ten priorities: Jobs, Growth and Investment, EU-US Free Trade (TTIP), and the EU as a Global Actor. Competition policy and privacy in the digital age, from both the US and EU perspective, will also be discussed.

The concept of Citizens' Dialogues builds on the model of "town hall meetings" or local fora during which politicians listen and debate with citizens about policies and decisions being taken.
