Since 2014, the European Commission provides unprecedented assistance to the reform process in Ukraine through the Support Group for Ukraine. The first report released today shows the group's positive impact on delivery of reforms.

The EU is providing unprecedented, tailor-made assistance for reforms needed on the ground.

Important progress has been achieved in areas such as:

  • the fight against anti-corruption through the establishment of specific institutions,
  • reforms for a functioning judicial system,
  • the liberalisation of the energy sector (gas and electricity),
  • decentralisation
  • the overall modernisation of the economy.

According to the first report, covering the period from September 2014 to March 2016, the Support Group for Ukraine has proved to be an efficient coordination tool for the European efforts in Ukraine.

Created in Spring 2014 and fully operational since Autumn of that year, the Support Group deploys 32 experts in Brussels and Kyiv to provide hands-on advice and expertise, as well as extensive financial support for institutional and legislative reforms. It works closely with the European External Action Service, the European Union's Delegation in Kyiv, and increasingly also with EU Member States.
