Slovenia celebrates Statehood Day

Slovenia celebrates its 30th anniversary of independence today. We declared independence on 25 June 1991, and successfully became part of international organisations over the following years. And now just a few days are left until our next major task - the second presidency to the Council of the European Union.

Our 30 years of independence has been a period full of challenges and triumphs. We won the war of independence and achieved international recognition, and over the period, Slovenia has become a member of the UN, joined the EU and NATO and adopted the euro.

The decision of Slovenians to establish their own state had been confirmed with a convincing majority half a year earlier, at the plebiscite held on 23 December 1990. Events marking the 30th anniversary of independence have therefore been taking place since the end of 2020. Numerous and varied events and projects have been taking place all over of Slovenia.

Photo exhibition on successes and key events in the 30 years of the country's independence

The Park of Military History in Pivka hosts the photography exhibition Proud of Slovenia - 30 Years. The photo exhibition encompasses 38 photographs depicting the turning points of the independent state, such as the unveiling of the Slovenian flag on Triglav, victory in the war of independence, introduction of its own currency, the Slovenian constitution, international recognition of the country, introduction of the euro, high state visits, sports and economic achievements and the natural and cultural attractions of the country.

30 Peaks for 30 Years

Mountaineering and hiking are the favourite pastime in Slovenia. On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Slovenia’s independence, we have prepared the project “30 peaks for 30 years” to celebrate our mountains and hills. The symbolism is further heightened on this 30th anniversary, because Slovenia will spend it at the summit of the European Union. In cooperation with the Alpine Association of Slovenia and the Slovenian Mountaineering Club Skala, we published a booklet featuring our selection of 30 peaks, each one carrying its own special story.

State Ceremony

The culmination of the 30th anniversary celebrations will be tonight's state ceremony, which will take place on the same square in which Slovenia's independence was declared 30 years ago. The ceremony will be attended by numerous foreign statespersons.
