EU i research ministers face an important milestone

On Friday, 26 November 2021, Minister of Education, Science and Sport Simona Kustec will chair the meeting of the EU Council of Ministers for Research in Brussels and present the key achievements of the Slovenian Presidency in research and innovation.

The Council is expected to adopt conclusions on the future governance of the European Research Area (ERA) aimed at achieving faster results and greater effects for the citizens of Europe. It is an important milestone for European science. The Chair of the Council, Minister Simona Kustec, emphasised: “The goal of the Slovenian Presidency is to strengthen, with the proposed concrete activities, the new European Research Area and contribute to the greater efficiency and faster response of the research and innovation field to the key challenges of our society.”

The new European Research Area is a central priority of the Slovenian Presidency, which introduces stakeholder involvement at a systemic level. This strengthens the links between research and innovation on the one hand and industry and other sectors on the other, consequently improving Europe's global competitiveness. At this Council meeting, the new European Research Area is defined in the proposed Conclusions on the Governance of the New ERA and the recommendations of the Pact for Research and Innovation. This is the first policy framework with short-term and long-term objectives, including the clearly defined role of the Council in their achievement. The adoption of conclusions and recommendations would be an outstanding achievement of the Slovenian Presidency.

The main discussion will also focus on the role of research and innovation in achieving inter-ministerial goals within the ‘Fit for 55’ package and within the interdisciplinary initiative New European Bauhaus. In the concluding part of the session, Minister Kustec will also present the key achievements and key events of the Presidency in the field of science, with an emphasis on the adoption of the entire package of legislative acts of the European Partnerships and the Ljubljana Declaration on Gender Equality.

The ministers are expected to adopt conclusions on ‘Space for everyone’ aimed at strengthening equal participation of stakeholders from all member states. They will hold a policy debate on long-term sustainability, sustainable development and financing of the ‘New Space’.
