The Austrian Chancellor has backed Poland's demands that the current system of voting among member states not be changed under a new EU Constitution.

Speaking over the weekend, Wolfgang Schüssel said he was "in complete agreement" with Warsaw's position on the matter, according to the Austrian daily, Der Standard.

Up to now Poland and Spain have been the most vociferous in their support for maintaining the voting status quo under the Nice Treaty - which gives them relatively beneficial vote weighting.

But a visit by the Polish Prime Minister's to Vienna on Friday seems to have paid off.

Bargaining on vote weighting in the new Constitution are proving to be the biggest sticking point in the Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) to finalise the text.

The move will serve to lessen Madrid and Warsaw's isolation in the ongoing conference.
