Cyprus and the Czech Republic have formally chosen their candidates for Commissioners meaning the full list of ten would-be Commissioners is complete.

Milos Kuzvart, the former minister for environment will be the Czech Republic's candidate while finance minister Marklos Kiprianu has been chosen for Cyprus, according to agency reports.

With the complete list of Commissioners in his hands, Commission President Romano Prodi can start working out which of the newcomers should be assigned to current Commissioners.

For the first six months between enlargement (1 May) and the new Commission (1 November), the ten new Commissioners will not have their own portfolio - but will be allowed to vote in the Brussels executive.

Once EU leaders have confirmed the nominees at the Spring Council in March, they will have to appear before the European Parliament in mid April for hearings before taking up the reins on 1 May.
