Services directive: EESC presents its opinion
to Commissioner McCreevy

The EESC rapporteurs presented the position of the Committee, which with its Opinion from 10 February strongly supports the need for an improved internal market in services and gives clear and concrete indications on how to find a constructive compromise eliminating risks for negative effects.

Mr Arno Metzler (Group III, Various interests, Germany) and Mr Ernst Erik Ehnmark (Group II, Employees, Sweden), the Rapporteur and the Co-rapporteur for the EESC Opinion on the Services directive on 7th April met Mr Charlie McCreevy i, the Commissioner responsible for the Internal Market.

The Commissioner quoted the EESC opinion as a good summary of the interests at stake and an important contribution to the ongoing process of discussion.

The EESC indicated its readiness to organise at the appropriate time a neutral forum for the institutions and stakeholders with the aim to discuss in an informal way options for amending the Directive in a way that would meet the concerns of those involved.
