Nieuwe Bulgaarse en Roemeense leden Europese Rekenkamer (en)
Following the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the European Union, Mrs Nadezhda SANDOLOVA (Bulgaria) and Mr Ispir OVIDIU (Romania) were appointed Members of the European Court of Auditors (ECA) as from 1 January 2007, for a renewable term of six years. In accordance with the EC Treaty, these appointements were made by the Council of the European Union on 20 December 2006, after consultation with the European Parliament.
The two new Members of the ECA will be formally sworn in at the Court of Justice of the European Communities on Monday 5 February 2007:
Mrs Nadezhda SANDOLOVA is a former Head of Department of the Bulgarian Ministry of Industry from 1991 to 1995, in charge of the analysis of debt of state enterprises. Between 1995 and 2005 she held various positions in the Bulgarian State Audit Office, including Member of the Board and EU Liaison Officer. Her responsibilities included the audit of the National Central Bank, the Bank Deposit Guarantee Fund and the Bulgarian Agency for Export Insurance.
Mr Ispir OVIDIU was a ministerial Advisor at the Romanian Ministry of Finance from 1997 to 1999. In 1999, he was appointed Counsellor of Accounts to the Romanian Court of Accounts. Between 1999 and 2006 he was assigned to various duties including the coordination of the audit of EU pre-accession funds ISPA and SAPARD in Romania, the coordination of the audit of state budget execution account and the audit of the execution account of Romania's public debt.

The EC Treaty requires the European Court of Auditors to audit independently the collection and spending of European Union funds and, through this, assess the way that the EU institutions discharge these functions. The Court aims to contribute to improving the financial management of European Union funds at all levels, so as to ensure maximum value for money for the citizens of the Union.
The Treaty stipulates that the ECA consists of one Member from each EU Member State. The Members of the Court are required to perform their duties in complete independence and in the general interest of the EuropeanUnion.
The 6 th enlargement of the EU increases the number of Court Members to 27 and the number of official languages of the European Union from 21 to 23.
The Luxembourg-based European Court of Auditors celebrates its 30 th anniversary in 2007.
