Through the annual prize, the EESC is seeking to encourage intellectual or practical contributions to a better awareness of the role of organised civil society in the European integration process. Its aim is to recognise and stimulate outstanding initiatives in order to help flesh out the emerging concept of participatory democracy.

The prize is open to civil society organisations and individuals from within the European Union. It has a value of 20,000 EUR.

The European Economic and Social Committee represents the various economic and social components of organised civil society. It is an institutional consultative body established by the 1957 Treaty of Rome. Its consultative role enables its members, and hence the organisations they represent, to participate in the Community decision-making process. The Committee has 344 members, who are appointed by the Council of Ministers.
