Young people to be consulted on their future in Europe

The National Forum On Europe, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) are to hold a special Youth conference to discuss the recent Communication on Youth from the European Commission. The document focuses on the European Union's role in promoting young people's full participation in education, employment and society. The aim of the event is to report back to decision-makers, at national and EU-level, the views of young people living in Ireland on how best to involve their generation in the future of Europe.

The Youth conference will take place next Thursday 18th October 2007 in Farmleigh House in Dublin's Phoenix Park from 10am to 4pm. It will be opened by the Minister of State for Education, Seán Haughey TD.

Those taking part will be 16 to 30 year olds who have already participated in the National Forum On Europe's wide-ranging Youth programme. They will include representatives of six National Youth Fora, held in conjunction with the NYCI (in Dublin, Cork, Sligo, Limerick and Waterford), as well as finalists from the Forum's 2007 Transition Year Public Speaking Competition.

The morning session will provide an opportunity for young people to explore the issues in small informal discussion groups. In the afternoon, there will be a plenary session chaired by Maurice Hayes, Chairman of the National Forum On Europe, during which the young participants will debate the issues with a panel of Forum Members - from the political parties and key civil society organisations. The Vice-President of the EESC, Jillian van Turnhout, and Mary Cunningham, the Director of the NYCI will also participate.

The European Economic and Social Committee represents the various economic and social components of organised civil society. It is an institutional consultative body established by the 1957 Treaty of Rome. Its consultative role enables its members, and hence the organisations they represent, to participate in the Community decision-making process. The Committee has 344 members, who are appointed by the Council of Ministers.
