Advantages and Benefits of the Euro
Time for Assessment
14-15 April 2008
On Monday 14 April and Tuesday 15 April, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) will hold a high-level conference on "The advantages and the benefits of the euro - Time for assessment" in order to take stock of the situation with socio-occupational organisations and the European institutions directly concerned.
The conference will be opened by EESC president, Mr Dimitriadis, and President of the EESC's ECO Section, Mr Dassis. Mr Lavric, State Secretary at the Ministry of Finance of Slovenia; Mr Stark, Member of the European Central Bank executive board; Mr Juncker, Eurogroup President; Ms Berès,Chair of the EP Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs; Mr Almunia, Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, as well as various socio-occupational associations, have already confirmed their participation in the conference.
Since the decision to introduce the euro in 1999, fifteen Member States have adopted it; more than 320 million EU citizens use it every day and benefit from its advantages, which will continue to increase as other Member States adopt it.
The euro has always had the EESC's support since the single currency is one of the key aspects of European integration. The euro is a necessary corollary to the single market insofar as it improves price transparency, eliminates exchange charges, facilitates international trade and strengthens the European Union's voice in the world.
