Europese Commissie kent Gouden Sterren toe aan 12 burgerschapsprojecten
De Europese Commissie i heeft 12 burgerparticipatieprojecten geselecteerd die actie en debat in verband met EU-aangelegenheden bij het grote publiek aanmoedigen. Later dit jaar zullen deze projecten tijdens een prijsuitreiking in Brussel in aanwezigheid van commissaris i Ján Figel' i de "Gouden Sterren voor actief Europees burgerschap" ontvangen. De Gouden Sterren voor 2008 worden toegekend in het kader van het programma "Europa voor de burger" en zijn een officiële erkenning van initiatieven die blijk geven van samenwerking, doeltreffende werkmethodes en tastbare resultaten op het gebied van burgerparticipatie. Bij de winnende projecten zijn deelnemers uit 22 EU-lidstaten betrokken.
Jan Figel’, Europees Commissaris voor Onderwijs, opleiding, cultuur en jeugd, verklaarde: "Europa heeft behoefte aan participatie en feedback van zijn burgers. Het programma "Europa voor de burger" onderschrijft en bevordert succesvolle inspanningen inzake actieve burgerparticipatie die concrete resultaten opleveren. Daarom is het ook niet te verbazen dat zich onder de winnaars van de Gouden Sterren systematisch initiatieven bevinden die tot denken aanzetten en in dezelfde richting wijzen: participatie in en bevordering van gemeenschappelijke Europese belangen. Volgens mij zijn deze projecten duidelijke voorbeelden van actieve burgers die in het dagelijkse leven aan Europa bouwen door zich in te zetten voor aangelegenheden die voor hen van belang zijn".
De selectie van de winnaars van dit jaar werd toevertrouwd aan een externe jury met zeven leden en een voorzitter, de heer Hannu Takkula, Europees Parlementslid en vicevoorzitter van de Commissie cultuur en onderwijs van het EP. Andere leden van de jury waren mevrouw Brenda King van het Europees Economisch en Sociaal Comité en de heer Keith Walters van het Comité van de Regio's.
"Wij kregen de kans kwalitatief hoogstaande projecten te beoordelen en de projecten te selecteren die niet alleen aan de doelstelling van het programma "Europa voor de burgers" beantwoordden, maar ook verder konden worden aangewend om vergelijkbare inspanningen aan te moedigen", aldus de juryvoorzitter, de heer Takkula. Hij voegde daaraan toe: "Dit jaar selecteerden wij naar aanleiding van het Europees Jaar van de interculturele dialoog drie projecten die voortbouwen op historische ervaringen van vroegere generaties en toekomstige generaties tolerantie en openheid bijbrengen".
De Gouden Sterren worden elk jaar toegekend in het kader van het programma "Europa voor de burger", dat zich richt op maatschappelijke organisaties en op een breder publiek. Dit belangrijke EU-programma op het gebied van actief burgerschap heeft tot doel de burgers nauwer bij de opbouw van Europa te betrekken. Er is voor 2008 een bedrag van om en bij de 27 miljoen euro voor uitgetrokken.
De uitreiking van de Gouden Sterren vindt op 13 november 2008 in Brussel plaats. Zij is toegankelijk voor het publiek, na voorafgaande aanmelding.
