EESC benoemt Martin Westlake als nieuwe voorzitter(en)

At its meeting on 8 July 2008, the EESC Bureau decided to appoint Mr. Martin Westlake as the next Secretary General of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). Mr. Westlake will take up his duties on 1 October 2008.
Westlake, 50, of British nationality, studied at University College, Oxford (BA Hons), the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies Bologna Center (MAIA) and the European University Institute, Florence (PhD).
In a 23 year-long European career, Westlake has worked variously in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the Secretariat General of the Council of Ministers and the Secretariat General and then the Education and Culture Directorate-General of the European Commission. He joined the EESC in 2003 as Head of Communication. In 2006 he was appointed Director of Consultative Work. He is married and has two children.

The European Economic and Social Committee represents the various economic and social components of organised civil society. It is an institutional consultative body established by the 1957 Treaty of Rome. Its consultative role enables its members, and hence the organisations they represent, to participate in the Community decision-making process. The Committee has 344 members, who are appointed by the Council of Ministers. |
