Luxembourg, 1 December 2008

The ECA is hosting the two-day annual meeting of the Contact Committee of the Heads of EU SAIs at the ECA headquarters in Luxembourg. This meeting is chaired by the ECA’s President, Mr Vítor Caldeira. The Heads of the European Union's 27 SAIs are present, as are the Heads of the Candidate countries' SAIs, who are attending as observers.

Cooperation with the Supreme Audit Institutions

The ECA, as the EU's external audit institution, seeks good contacts and working relations with similar organisations all over the world. Particular attention is given to the Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) in Europe, where cooperation with the SAIs of the EU Member States and EU candidate and potential candidate countries is especially important.

The aim of this cooperation is closely linked to the Court's responsibility for auditing EU funds. As these funds generally pass through the national administrations of the countries concerned and the respective SAIs audit those administrations, close cooperation between the ECA and the national SAIs is essential for effective and efficient implementation of the ECA's tasks.

The Contact Committee's programme

The first day is focusing on panel discussions about the EU budget reform and the revised Lisbon Strategy 2008-2010. On this occasion, Mrs Dalia Grybauskaité, the Commissioner for Financial Programming and Budget, is delivering a lead presentation. The second day is scheduled to include exchanges of experiences and information on the outcome of cooperation, covering specific areas of the management of EU funds and audit issues as well as the outlook for future activities.
