Call for a new European social action programme

In the final declaration of the conference marking the 20th anniversary of the Community Charter of Fundamental Social Rights, EESC president Mario Sepi called on behalf of the EESC and Notre Europe for a new social action programme.

The first signatories are Mario Sepi and Jacques Delors i , former president of the European Commission and a key supporter of the 1989 charter.

The declaration calls on the European institutions to adopt a social action programme guaranteeing that fundamental social rights will be accorded the same importance as competition rules and economic freedoms.

On the eve of the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty, all civil society organisations and members of the general public are invited to sign this petition.
