Enhancing Transnational Cooperation on Trafficking Cases

in South-Eastern Europe (TRM-II)

First Transnational Seminar, 17-18 March 2011, Budapest, Hungary

PRESS RELEASE

Over a hundred representatives from governmental, non-governmental and international organisations from South-Eastern Europe (SEE) and the European Union will gather in Budapest on 17-18 March 2011 to discuss the findings of a recently conducted research on existing mechanisms for transnational referral of trafficked persons. Anti-trafficking experts and practitioners from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo1, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia will work together to identify ways for more efficient and effective transnational cooperation in cases of trafficking and to find adequate strategic and operational responses to changing trends in human trafficking.

The presentation of the research results concludes the first phase of the 18-month project “Enhancing Transnational Cooperation on Trafficking Cases in South-Eastern Europe (TRM-II)”, implemented by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) and funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The research points to current gaps in transnational cooperation and challenges in the exchange of information. Based on the research findings, the project seeks to improve cooperation between countries of origin, destination and transit. Furthermore, the project provides tools for streamlining the process of providing comprehensive and effective assistance, support and protection of trafficked persons, focusing especially on special measures for children and on the increasing trend of labour exploitation.

The Transnational Seminar, which is co-hosted by the Hungarian Ministry of Interior in the framework of the Hungarian European Union (EU) presidency, will be opened by Ms Krisztina Berta, Hungarian Deputy State Secretary for EU and International Affairs, H.E. Eleni Tsakopoulos Kounalakis,    United    States    Ambassador    in    Budapest    and    Mr     Peter

Widermann , ICMPD Director General. The OSCE Special Representative and Coordinator for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings, Ms Maria Grazia Giammarinaro , will deliver a key note speech.

It is expected that the seminar will be a step forward in strengthening existing partnerships among international anti-trafficking actors and reinforcing their commitment to a harmonized transnational response to human trafficking as well as to strengthening the protection of the rights of trafficked persons.

Under UNSCR 1244.
