The Prime Minister of Malta, Lawrence Gonzi i, and Mario Galea, Parliamentary Secretary for Elderly and Community Care, officially inaugurated on July 20 the country’s third night shelter, at St. Vincent de Paul Residence in Luqa.

The opening of this night shelter is another initiative that celebrates the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations. Over 300 guests and stakeholders attended the inauguration.

The aim of night shelters is to assist seniors living independently in the community. These facilities ensure older persons’ peace of mind during the night, whilst returning home for the day. During their stay, clients can socialise, watch TV, have breakfast together, meet their spiritual needs and receive assistance from professional carers.

Under the direction of the Parliamentary Secretary for Elderly and Community Care, the public investment amounted to 70,000 Euros and will meet the needs of eight older persons every night.
