Margo Vliegenthart

In 2000, Margo Vliegenthart, member of the Dutch House of Representatives, introduced the keynote speaker of the 8th Europe Lecture, Gerhard Aigner i, chief executive of UEFA (1999-2003). The theme of this lecture was 'Euro 2000 and the social significance of sport'.

Talented and competent politician for the Dutch social democrats (PvdA). She started her political career as president of the Young Socialists. She quickly rose through the ranks of the PvdA, a testament to her political skills and extensive knowledge of policies in various areas, foremost of which were youth affairs and emancipation. After becoming vice parliamentary group-leader, she became junior minister from 1998 to 2002.

In her tenure she was confronted with the sensitive issue of growing waiting lists in the healthcare system. After the PvdA suffered a loss in the 2002 elections, she retired from politics. Was appointed by H.M. the Queen as a member of the SER (Social-Economic Council) and is an independent consultant.

"Ik kan me voorstellen dat het voor u enigszins een verrassing is dat ik hier sta vandaag, terwijl de minister van Binnenlandse Zaken, de heer Bram Peper, was aangekondigd. Het zal u bekend zijn dat de heer Peper afgelopen week is afgetreden. Daarom zal ik als staatssecretaris van Sport, en in die hoedanigheid ook sterk betrokken bij het komende EK voetbal, nu de introductie houden.

Ik doe dat met des te meer plezier, omdat ik verwacht dat de heer Aigner duidelijk stelling zal nemen in een aantal zaken met betrekking tot het EK voetbal en tot sport in het algemeen. Het zijn zaken waarin ik zeer geïnteresseerd ben (en met mij de collega’s in de Europese Unie). Het gaat dan om vragen over het snel groeiende belang en de invloed van sponsors bij evenementen als het EK voetbal. En ook over eisen die de sport stelt aan overheden.

Overigens kan dan evengoed de tegenvraag gesteld worden wat het zwaar commerciële topvoetbal voor maatschappelijke betekenis heeft en voor het voetbal in het algemeen betekent. Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat we meer overeenkomsten hebben dan verschillen. Uiteindelijk is het ons allen te doen om het behoud van de volkssport voetbal. En het is onze plicht gezamenlijk oplossingen te vinden die van belang zijn voor zowel het voetbal als de gehele samenleving."
